Lips of an Angel
by Iyasu

~*~*~*~*~*~

Seth was sleeping peacefully when he was suddenly jolted awake by the ringing of his cell phone. Who the hell’s calling me at this time? he wondered when he saw that the bright green number on his digital clock read 2:45 a.m. He picked up his phone from his nightstand and glanced at the name. Skyylina. Seth immediately looked over at the person lying next to him, and seeing that she was still asleep, he carefully climbed out of bed and went into the living room to talk without disturbing her. “Hello?” he answered softly.

“Hey,” was the soft, feminine response.

“Honey, why are you calling me so late?” Seth asked as he stifled a yawn.

Skyylina replied, “I needed to talk to you.”

Seth thought of his sleeping girlfriend and whispered, “It’s kinda hard to talk right now,” as he thought of the many possibilities of what could happen if she found him talking this late at night to his latest ex-girlfriend, and none of them were good. He thought that he heard a hitch in Skyy’s voice when she spoke, but he wasn’t sure.

“Why? Is Iyasu there?”

There it was again. Was she crying? Seth didn’t ponder on it for long, because her question reminded him of his situation. Not only is she here, but she’s asleep as well, Seth thought to himself, but said to Skyy, “Yeah.” Suddenly he heard sniffling on the other end of the line, and forgot all about the danger of being caught. “Honey, why are you crying, is everything okay?” He knew it wasn’t, but he had to ask.

Skyylina said between sniffles, “Everything’s fine.” In an attempt to change the subject, she asked, “Why are you whispering?”

“I gotta whisper, ‘cause I can’t be too loud,” Seth answered quietly. “Skyy, don’t lie to me.” There was no way that he was going to let her change the subject like she was trying to do.

Honey, why are you calling me so late?
It’s kinda hard to talk right now
Honey, why are you crying, is everything okay?
I gotta whisper, ‘cause I can’t be too loud...

Skyylina began to hiccup slightly as she tried to speak. “Seth... it’s just so hard... I don’t know how long I can take this...”

The sound of Skyy’s grief filled Seth with pity, even if he didn’t know the cause of it. “Take what?”

“I thought it would be okay... but every time I look at him... Jonathan... I wish that he was you... is that wrong?”

He could tell easily that her guilt was eating her alive, but there was nothing that he could say to ease it for her. He felt the same guilt. What they were doing was wrong. not in body, but in heart. “Well,” Seth began, “my girl’s in the next room right now, and sometimes I wish she was you too. We’re in the same situation. I guess we never really moved on, even though we thought we had.”

“Seth, don’t say that.”

“Why not?” Seth questioned.

“Seth. You know why,” Skyylina said in a determined tone, one full of denial.

He didn’t quite understand why she didn’t want to say what he had, but Seth sighed, giving up on trying to get Skyy to explain herself and changing the subject himself. “You want to know something?”

“What?”

“It’s really good to hear your voice, it’s been a while.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Well, my girl’s in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It’s really good to hear your voice saying my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words, it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl, you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel...

Skyylina giggled softly, causing a smile to spread across Seth’s lips. She wasn’t crying anymore, and that knowledge soothed away his pity and concern. “It’s really good to hear your voice too.”

“You know, it’s funny that you’re calling me tonight, because I was just thinking about you earlier today. I guess my wish came true.”

It went silent on Skyy’s end of the line for a few moments before she slowly began to speak. “One thing that makes it so hard... and why I called was because it’s been hard for me to sleep. I... I keep dreaming about you, and... I just wonder sometimes... have you ever dreamt of me?”

Had he? He saw visions of her in his mind when he was awake and when he was dreaming, and those visions were about to drive him insane. “Yes, I’ve dreamt of you too,” Seth replied as he stood and softly went back to the bedroom. He glanced inside and looked at Iyasu’s sleeping form. He was safe at the moment, but he wondered if Skyylina was going through the same thing too. “Does Jonathan know that you’re talking to me?” he asked as he started back down the hall.

“Mmhmm. He knows.”

“Will it start a fight between you two?”

“It shouldn’t,” Skyy replied. “He knows that we’re just friends. He just doesn’t know that I wish we were more.”

“He needs to know Skyy.”

“I know... I’ll tell him someday. Does Iyasu know?”

Seth paused for a moment, his eyes going back to focus on the open door to the bedroom. “No, I don’t think she has a clue.”

“She needs to know, Seth.”

“You’re one to talk,” he said as he sank down into his favorite recliner in the living room.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It’s funny that you’re calling me tonight
And yes, I’ve dreamt of you too
And does he know you’re talking to me?
Will it start a fight?
No, I don’t think she has a clue...

Skyy laughed. “I know, it’s just ironic that you’re going to tell me that Jonathan needs to know, and you haven’t told Iyasu yet. At least Jonathan knows that I talk to you, unlike her, Seth.”

“Say it again.”

“Um... okay... I said, ‘it’s just ironic that’ -”

“No,” Seth interrupted. “Not that. My name.”

“Seth?” Skyylina repeated quizzically. “Why?”

“Because my name sounds so sweet coming from the lips of an angel,” Seth explained. “I like that.”

Skyylina made a noise of disbelief. “You can’t be serious.”

“I am. I know what it sounds like, but it’s true.”

Skyy only laughed for a few moments. “You know, when you say it, it does sound kind of nice, even if it does remind me of an overused pick-up line.”

Seth chuckled at her response, knowing himself that he could have phrased his compliment better. But how could he express the feelings that rose up inside him when he heard her voice? How could he express the weakness he had in his heart for her, one that only grew as time passed? He couldn’t, not through words.

Tonight, he knew that if Skyylina was to tell him that she was alone and she needed him to come over, he would go to her in a heartbeat. He also knew what would come of it, and while he knew that there would be consequences and repercussions for it later, he knew that those thoughts would not halt his actions. He was extremely close to leaving the apartment that he shared with Iyasu and asking Skyy to join him in a place where they could truly be alone with one another.

“Seth... I was wondering if you...”

Her voice trailed off, and Seth didn’t ask her to finish her statement. He knew what she was trying to say. If he asked her to finish, she would ask him to come over to be with her. As long as he didn’t hear the words, he could still remain faithful. But it was so, so hard. Because of this weakness, it was in his best interest to stop his communication with Skyylina if he wanted to remain faithful in his current relationship. But how could he? He said goodbye to her once, and he failed miserably at it. He didn’t have the willpower to do it again, regardless of whether it was successful or not. However, maybe he had the willpower to at least end things, to be faithful for one more night.

“Skyy?”

“Yeah?”

“You know... I never want to say goodbye when I’m speaking to you, but I should go. You make it too hard...” To be faithful to my girlfriend, he finished in his mind. Those words, even though unsaid, hung in the silence between them.

“I know,” Skyylina replied. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” Seth closed his phone and sat back with a sigh. Who did he really want to be with? Everything was so complicated.

What Seth didn’t know was that Iyasu was awake, and that she had heard nearly everything, that she had only pretended to be fast asleep from the moment the phone rang. She now climbed out of the bed and walked to the open door. As she peered out of it, she saw Seth in his recliner. “Seth?” she called as she walked down the hall. He didn’t answer, apparently lost in his thoughts. Iyasu approached him and laid a gentle hand on his shoulder. Seth snapped from his thoughts with a start. “It’s just me,” she said soothingly. “I awoke and you were here. Are you okay?” She could easily tell that he thought that she had caught him on the phone with Skyy and discovered everything from the flash of fear and guilt that entered his eyes when he looked up at her. The fear, but not the guilt, then faded away when she said that she just woke up.

He needn’t have worried; she had known nearly from the start.

She just hadn’t known that it was this serious and getting more so with each conversation.

“Yeah, everything’s fine,” Seth lied. “I just can’t sleep. I think I’m going to go for a drive. Want to come?”

“No thanks, I’m going back to bed.” Iyasu watched him go, not knowing where he was going, but knowing that he wasn’t going over to Skyylina’s. After he left, she went back to their bedroom and picked up her cell phone. She scrolled down her contact list until it highlighted Juran’s name. She pressed ‘Send’ and waited as the phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Juran.”

“Honey, why are you calling me so late?” Juran asked.

“Well...” Iyasu began, “I was wondering if I could join you tonight. I’m moving out.”

“I thought you’d never ask.”
